The Grossmont-Cuyamaca Community College District’s Environmental Health and Safety Management program provides a curriculum that prepares new and continuing students for both immediate professional opportunities as well as furthering their educational pursuits at the bachelor’s level and higher. Focused on the occupational health and safety and the environmental health arenas, the program occupies an unique niche enhancing students’ knowledge regarding training.


OSHA 8 Hour Hazwoper Refresher $125

This 8-hour Hazardous Waste Operator and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) course is designed to maintain the 40-hour or 24-hour Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) annual certificate required for employees in the public or private sector, large or small businesses, who work with hazardous waste from management operations to on-site clean-up. This course includes lectures, table top exercises, and hands-on activities. A certificate and a wallet card will be issued upon completion of the course.

Department of Transportation (DOT) Hazardous Materials Regulations $150

This course covers the Department of Transportation (DOT) Hazardous Materials Regulations (HMR) governing the transportation of hazardous substances. This course fulfills the DOT 49 CFR Hazardous Materials Transportation Awareness Training required by DOT and includes: using a hazardous materials table, preparing shipping papers, marking labeling, placard requirements, security awareness and site policies, handling emergencies, notification, identification and communication of hazards of transportation.

OSHA 40 Hour Hazwoper $400

Obtain local, hands-on training with an OSHA certified instructor. Cuyamaca College in El Cajon, CA has been delivering 40 Hour HAZWOPER training for 20 years. Our 40 hour course provides federal and state certification for those who work with hazardous waste for management operations, emergency response teams or trainers, and site cleanup. This course satisfies the requirements for generalized employee training under the Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) 1910.120 and State of California Regulations 5192 Title 8.

30 Hour CAL/OSHA General Industry Safety Training $325

This course covers Federal OSHA-mandated topics covered by OSHA 29 CFR 1910, such as; an overview of the OSHA Act, how to locate specific OSHA regulations, how inspections, citations, and penalties work, how to assess; walking and working surfaces, injury & illness recordkeeping, hazard communication, requirements for personal protective equipment (PPE), respiratory protection, hazardous materials, a basic overview of electrical safety, and many other OSHA topics specific to general industry.   The skills in this course will prepare a participant to pass the OSHA 30 Hour General Industry Safety certificate exam which is offered at the end of the course. Training is provided by a trainer authorized by an OSHA Training Institute Education Center.  Training meets section 26051.5 requirements.

Introduction to Hazardous Waste Management

This course will introduce students to the extensive state and federal hazardous waste laws and regulations. Students will learn what is required to generate, handle, store, and prepare hazardous waste for Shipment (disposal and treatment). Students will also be introduced to Treatment, Storage, and Disposal Facility (TSDF) operations and waste minimization strategies. The emphasis shall be on State of California requirements (Title 22).

Introduction to EHS Recordkeeping and Training

This course will introduce students to the multitude of records and documents required to maintain compliance. Students will learn what compliance records should be developed and maintained, how to store compliance records, and how to prepare compliance records for a regulatory inspection. Students will learn how to identify applicable EHS employee training requirements, and how to prepare and deliver effective presentation of records.

Introduction to Radiation Safety

This course will introduce students to the extensive state and federal laws and regulations relating to radiation use in industry (emphasis on the Health Care and Life Sciences industries). Students will be introduced to common laboratory and industrial applications, “what is radiation”, the health effects associated with exposure to radiation, exposure control methodology, contamination control, how to respond to incident involving radiation, and the elements of a basic low-level radiation safety program (including worker training requirements, radioactive waste management, inventory control, and security).

Bloodborne Pathogens

This course helps students understand bloodborne pathogens in the workplace and provides common modes of their transmission, methods of prevention, and other pertinent information for those who have the potential to be exposed to blood or other potentially infectious material. Industry needs, standards and requirements will also be covered.   

Associates Degrees and Comprehensive Certificates

The District also offers an Associate of Science degree and technician certificates in two areas: Environmental Management and Occupational Safety and Health Management.
